Johnny Collins

John passed away March 13th, 2020 in Denver, CO.
It was a combination of failure with his heart, lungs and kidneys.

"He was always so proud to be senior class president. It was a real feather in his hat the gave him great confidence when he went to Texas Tech and became the first black student association president."

Thank you for reaching out, Charlie Collins

Today I found out about Johnny Collins. I tried to contact him just recently about the reunion but did not hear back. Now I understand why!  My wife Francene and I are sad to know he is gone.  He along with several other of my students made my first job as a teacher in Abilene a real joy.  He was in the Senior class play I directed .  He was a talented and remarkable young man. God Bless his family and friends.  Twain  Tharp, PhD, former Speech and Debate coach at Abilene High School.

Johnny was a becan of light in a year of racial tension my senior year. He was voted our class president and wore that mantle with great pride and dignity. Any time you saw him in the hall he would always say hi with a smile on his face...It didn't matter who you were!  Johnny and his little brother along with his mother and grandmother lived down the block from us. He would come down the street and talk to my parents as though he was part of our family. I lost touch with Johnny after he went to Tech and I went into the Marines but I will always remember Johnny for the light his spirit  projected!
